Celine Dion All By Myself song is one of the best songs she has ever sung. However, it is the original song of the American singer and songwriter Eric Carmen that was released in 1975. The song verse is based on the second movement of Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2 in C minor. It was eminently used to underscore the British film Brief Encounter released in 1945. It uses the chorus of the song “Let’s Pretend,” which Carmen wrote and sung with Raspberries in 1972. Besides, the studio guitarist Hugh McCracken gave the slide guitar solo performance. However, Celine Dion All By Myself version created a great success with this classical song.

Background And Original Song Composition

At the time, Rachmaninoff’s music was in the public domain in the United States. Carmen assumed there were no copyrights on it, but it was still protected outside the U.S. He was approached by the Rachmaninoff estate following the release of the album and told that it was safe.

An arrangement was reached in which the estate would obtain 12% of the royalties from “All by Myself” and “Never Gonna Fall in Love Again.” It was based on the third movement of Symphony No. 2 by Rachmaninoff.

Carmen said that he also included part of another melody into this song. It was taken from his previous hit with the Raspberries, “Let’s Pretend”, as noted above.

Geoff Edgers from Salon Magazine

Geoff described Celine Dion all by myself as a “dog-ear-shattering remake”.

Christopher Smith from TalkAboutPopMusic:

Only a few vocalists would try to do justice to Eric Carmen’s 1975 classic, but Celine is one of them with her out-of-this-world voice, and maybe the only one big enough to raise the long and emotional chords of the songs at the end. Additionally, when she hits the final “anymoooooooooooore,” Celine shatters glass and blows eardrums.

Put on the orchestra, drums, and guitar. However, they show no match to Celine as she repeats the mainline of the song “do not want to be, all by myself” again and again. Even, the phrases are Earth shaking and epic, and it was hardly surprising that it was not released as a single in due course either.
